2020 HOUSTON SCBWI ANNUAL CONFERENCE AWARDS

The Houston Chapter of SCBWI encompasses one of the United States’ largest and most diverse cities, in addition to the entirety of the Texas coast. The range of experiences and cultures is a point of pride for this region as well as a Texas-sized responsibility. Our priority is to reflect this representation and serve all members of our local community. In addition, we aim to help the children’s book industry and our local chapter build a bigger bookshelf, by creating a welcoming environment for creators while striking down barriers to access. In an effort to broaden access to resources offered by the Houston SCBWI chapter, we invite applications to our 2020 Conference Awards.

Submissions open Saturday, August 1, 2020 and the deadline to submit is Sunday, August 16, 2020.

GULF COAST COMMUNITY AWARD (2)

This award seeks to address financial barriers amongst creators in our region for whom attending the conference is a financial hardship. Two awards will be granted, one each to an author and an illustrator.

Each GULF COAST COMMUNITY AWARD includes the following:
♦  Attendance to the entire live 2020 online conference event which includes access to all keynote speeches, intensives, and breakouts; and

♦  One faculty critique or portfolio review matched by the Awards Committee.

VOICES RISING AWARD (2)

This award seeks to lift the voices of underrepresented creators through attendance to our annual conference and provision of a critique by a faculty member. Two awards will be granted, one each to an author and an illustrator who self-identify as members of a community which has been underrepresented in the children’s and young adult literature. We welcome all definitions of underrepresentation.

Please note: the submissions themselves are not required to reflect an underrepresented or marginalized population, only the creator.

Each VOICES RISING AWARD includes the following:
♦  Attendance to the entire live 2020 online conference event which includes access to all keynote speeches, intensives, and breakouts; and

♦  One faculty critique or portfolio review matched by the Awards Committee.

ELIGIBILITY FOR BOTH AWARDS

All applicants must live within the Houston Chapter (which includes the entirety of the Texas Coast from Beaumont to Brownsville). View the SCBWI Regional map here. Note: you may need to click the “View as Map” button in the upper right hand corner.
